Off-Grid Innovation Powers ‘Rumi’ a Luxury Eco-Resort

The Challenge

Rumi on Louth, a new secluded eco-resort off the coast of South Australia, presented a unique challenge: how to provide reliable power to a remote island while supporting minimal environmental impact. Traditional off-grid solar systems could not provide the flexibility and scalability required for the resort’s operating needs. With project partners including CE+T Australia, the PowerPlus team developed an innovative solution, the Escape20 and Escape50 to deliver reliable, renewable energy to the Island, making it a benchmark project for large-scale off-grid power systems.

The Solution: Powering an Entire Resort

The micro-grid side of this solution consists of 16 Escape20 BESS’ which not only store energy but control the power flow across the island thanks to the CE+T Sierra converters. Coupled with the Inview monitoring system, the entire system has the ‘brains’ to make decisions for optimal performance based on solar input, battery charge, and energy demand, or in cases of poor weather events that affect solar production, the diesel backup.

The system can deliver up to 600 kilowatts of power, making it one of the largest off-grid installations in the region. The modular design of the Escape20 and additional 16 Escape50 (DC coupled PV) allows for future expansion, ensuring the resort can scale its energy system as its needs grow–with system expansion already underway.

How it Works: From Sun Comes Power

Generated solar energy is converted by the Escape50 BESS (containing MPPT’s) and stored in rack mounted lithium batteries. The Escape20 provides the power distribution side with the CE+T Sierra modules ensuring a steady 230V/400V output–or simply put, clean, reliable, 3-phase power.

This complex system provides continuous power to the entire resort, including sensitive electronics, the desalination plant supplying water for the kitchen and accommodation, and lighting. The system is modular, meaning components can be swapped or added as needed, ensuring easy maintenance and long-term reliability.

Whilst this system is bespoke, it's architecture is modular and easily replicated, showcasing the possibilities you can achieve with energy storage.

The Results: Reliable, Sustainable Power for Louth Island

Rumi on Louth has been in operation for nearly a year, being completely powered by Australian made renewables. Visitors to the resort experience luxury without ever realising the sophisticated technology working behind the scenes to keep the island powered sustainably.

For the PowerPlus team and all stakeholders involved its a big achievement. In particular Bradley Paton, PowerPlus Founder and CEO it’s a rewarding milestone to see an entire island be powered off-grid only emphasising the possibilities of renewables.

“Whilst this system is bespoke, it’s architecture is modular and easily replicated, showcasing the possibilities you can achieve with energy storage” he said.

For CE+T Sales Manager Ian Rowlands, “The collaboration between CE+T and PowerPlus resulted in a world-class solution sets a new standard for sustainable off-grid power projects.”
